The Marriage of Figaro was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1786; The libretto was prepared by Lorenzo Da Ponte. This work, adapted from a stage play called "A Day of Madness" or "The Marriage of Figaro", written in French by Pierre Beaumarchais, is an opera buffa, that is, a comic opera. This opera by Mozart was very successful when it was first performed in Vienna. The overture to this opera by Mozart is particularly famous and is often performed in concerts as a solo orchestral work.
